A specialty: Hand-fed Finches

Normally, Finches are the kind of birds that you can only look at--they usually won't let you get too close or pet them, much less like it.

However, properly socialized hand-fed finches are tame, and love attention.

Ryah, a Zebra finch I hand-fed, is such an example:
"Every time I opened Ryah's cage, she would fly unto my hand. She was content to sit in my hand or my arm. Sometimes she would fly off, but when I called her she would chirp and usually fly back. She was very nice."

I have even heard of a hand-fed Cut-throat finch that talked! In my opinion (I have hand-fed to weaning 8 Zebra Finches so far), tame, hand-fed finches can be very fun, not to mention cute, wonderful little pets that you just can't resist loving. And unlike hookbills, who sometimes nip and bite, hand-fed finches never bite and are good beginner pets.

If you are considering getting a hand-fed finch and want it to remain tame, I advise that you only get one. Also, if you have any other finches, canaries, or like birds (which can include grass parakeets and budgies), be sure they are kept separate from your hand-fed finch. This is important! Otherwise, even though it is hand-fed, your hand-fed finch will socialize and bond with the other birds and not as much with you, getting less tame. I also have to keep this in mind. When hand-feeding, I have to make sure I only hand-feed one finch at a time, or completely separate them, so that they will get tame. I learned this the hard way! Of course, hand-fed finches also need to be socialized with, both during hand-feeding and ever after.

More info on getting a hand-fed finch from us:
If you would like a hand-fed finch from me, request one, because I usually don't hand-feed any unless they are requested and reserved. If requested, I might be able to hand-feed one from the next clutch for you, unless someone is already in line for one. If that is the case, you will have to wait your turn. Hand-fed finches can be reserved as early as a few days old.
